Fun sightings around town

I already posted about how lovely the arboretum is right now, but we’ve stumbled across a few other pretty/cool things off campus as well.

First, both times we found ourselves driving at night in the past week, we saw quite a lot of deer! The first time, we saw eight or so on the side of the road near Carrboro, and last night, we passed two along 1-40 when we were driving back from the airport, and then five or six more crossed the street in front of us in the middle of a neighborhood near our apartment! They hopped a short fence into someone’s backyard, silly things.

Also, apparently wisteria grows wild all over the trees and bushes (and even the ground) along many of the roads here in the Triangle. It’s everywhere, and in a lot of places, it’s very lush – so gorgeous. I don’t know how long it will last, but I’m enjoying the heck out of it in the meanwhile!

(This one is my photo)

Yesterday was a great day, and today looks like it will shape up quite nicely too. Have a happy Friday, everyone!

Daniel is back!

And goodness, he is scorched!

He’s writing up all the details of his trip and sharing tons of pictures and video over on his blog.

Check it out!

Mirabelle Mondays: SCOTUS Prep 2012

You may have already seen this on facebook, but Mirabelle was very interested in the sleeping bag Daniel got for his court campout . . .

Daniel took the megabus from Durham to DC early this morning and made it to the court around 7:00. He’ll hang out there until tomorrow morning, when he hopes to get a spot in the court for day 2 of the oral arguments in the Affordable Care Act case. He’ll fly back to North Carolina that evening.

UPDATE: I spoke with Daniel several times today (not to mention a handful of text messages that were also exchanged), and the sleeping bag seems to be keeping him quite cozy, which is great. He was among a number of folks who were interviewed by Good Morning America this morning, though those clips never aired. He still managed to get some quotes in elsewhere, though . . .

UPDATE 2: Daniel got a ticket for today’s session, and you can see him in the picture posted with the article below (gray hoodie with the backpack) . . .

I don’t have any fun pictures to post today, so I thought I’d just write a brief update on what we’ll be up to today and over the weekend – there’s a lot of it!

Today – I’m enjoying not having to go in to the office early for the first time in a long time today. (I finished collecting data for my first year project earlier this week – yippee – so that will free up a lot of time in my schedule! Double yippee!) After I finish writing this post, I’m planning to spend the rest of the morning working on an assignment for my seminar class. I’ll just have to go to campus before 3:00 for my Statistics lab section . . . speaking of that Statistics, we got our midterm exams back yesterday, and I got the highest grade in the class! #winning!

Daniel is at Duke’s Admitted Students Open House today, which is exciting. I think they’re going to be having lunch in the basketball stadium “Hall of Honor” (or something like that . . . I scoffed at the name, whatever it was), so that’s funny. I’m afraid I don’t know much more about the day than that, although he was reading something last night (a case?) to prepare for something today (a mock class?) . . . I’ll have him update this section later if he wants to. Funny thing: I think having me here this morning with Daniel away has really confused Mirabelle.

Tonight, we’re going to go to an NCAA watch party at a friend’s house. Carolina is playing Ohio tonight, and everyone’s excited! It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Saturday – I have a lot of things on my to-do list for this weekend, but I should be able to have a relaxing Sunday if I take care of them tomorrow. There’s a lot of cleaning/organizing that needs to go on . . . vacuuming, sorting through my closet (it’s been so warm here lately, that I’ve decided to swap out cool-weather clothes for warm-weather clothes already), etc. . . . as well as more cognitively-demanding stuff . . . double-checking taxes, writing up a protocol for my next study to submit to our ethics board, doing a peer review of a friend’s paper for a course, etc. It will be a busy day, but maybe we’ll top it off with a movie night or something.

Sunday – Weather permitting, we’d like to visit the NC Botanical Garden. As you saw from my post on Wednesday, it is most certainly springtime in Chapel Hill, and we’ve had “visit the Botanical Garden when everything is blooming” on our list since at least January. Other than that, we’ll do our usual Sunday routine (church, grocery run, etc.), but it should definitely be a low-key kind of day.

I know I said I don’t have any pictures for today, but a blog post without pictures just won’t fly, so here’s another picture from the beach. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Life is good: A few things that have made me smile lately

Every morning, my walk from the bus stop to the psychology building takes me through the campus arboretum. Right now, it seems like everything is in bloom, and the arboretum in the morning is just glorious. Behold:

Moving on to a completely different landscape . . .

I also occasionally check in on webcams that are posted in places we visited on our honeymoon last summer. On Monday morning, I was treated to awesome views from Paradise on Mount Rainier . . .

. . . and Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park.

(Can you believe all that snow?! The edge of the roof you see there is attached to the building we sat behind in this photo.)

Daniel is gearing up for a big (brief but exciting) DC trip, and he purchased a folding chair in preparation for many hours spent in front of the Supreme Court. He sent me this picture earlier today:

Finally, my parents are enjoying some well-earned rest today, and I’m hoping that we’ll be able to skype with them this evening. I am LOVING all of their blog posts and pictures (I’ve updated my “links” page accordingly . . .), and best of all, I got the greatest text from my mom earlier today . . .

We hike into NC tomorrow!!

Welcome, mom and dad. We’re glad you’re here!

Spring Break Trip to Emerald Isle, NC!

Fresh off our trip to Virginia from the day before, we hopped back in the car yesterday morning to head to the beach!

We immediately turned back around and hopped into the other car because one tire was looking a little low on air, but we made it there all the same!

I might have been a little excited . . .

It was another 3-hour drive, but this one seemed a little easier. We were rewarded with the perfect, little public beach. It was a beautiful day, and the water was a gorgeous color.

Well, it was a gorgeous color out past the sandy surf. 🙂

Daniel spent nearly the entire time doing this . . .

. . . while I did this . . .

. . . and this.

To top it all off, the beach was practically empty. I was worried that going on spring break would mean lots of crowds, but I had hoped that they would all be a little farther south in Wilmington. I guess I don’t know where they were, but I do know where they weren’t!

Here are some other highlights:

Spring Break Trip to Virginia

Wow! It’s been a long day! We got on the road a little after 10:00 this morning and drove for around three hours to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley to visit a few places that have been on our list for some time now . . .

The first stop of the day was Foamhenge! Yes, someone constructed a full-scale replica of Stonehenge entirely out of styrofoam. Why? I have no idea.

Truth be told, I don’t think I really appreciated Foamhenge . . . at least, not the way Daniel did. 🙂

I did appreciate the scenery, though!

We stopped again less than a mile down the road to see the Natural Bridge, an enormous limestone arch over a pretty, little creek.

The Natural Bridge is geologically and historically significant for plenty of reasons that wikipedia or Daniel could tell you about, but I’m just going to post pictures. It’s been too long of a day for much more than that. 🙂

We tried to visit Poplar Forest – Thomas Jefferson’s other home – on the way back, but it was shutting down for the day by the time we arrived. Oh well . . . some other time.

In the meanwhile, I’m going to rest up for our next spring break adventure! Stay tuned . . .
